Why is a T-Shirt Called a T-shirt? And How to Make it Extra Special.

T-shirts are a staple in every wardrobe, they’re simple, yet versatile and come in so many different styles. They’re great for when the weather is warming up, but you can wear something over them when it gets a bit cooler. But, do you know why it’s called a T-shirt? And how can you enhance something so perfectly simple? We go over the origin of the name and ways to choose a shirt and style it so that you can get the most out of your humble tee.

Why Is It Called a T-Shirt?

If you take a T-shirt from your wardrobe and lay it out flat, it should (so long as it’s still in one piece) form a “T” shape, where the sleeves form the top of the letter and the body forms the line down. A basic and minimalist garment, it covers just what most people would want covered when they go out.

All The Different Types of T-Shirt

Plain and Simple: You have the plain and simple, unadorned tee. A single coloured fabric, cut to form the characteristic T shape. These can be adapted to suit all sorts of styles without making a bold statement.

T-Shirts with Longer Sleeves: There are a whole range of t-shirts with different sleeve lengths. Shirts with no sleeves or that have straps that just hang on the shoulders are tank tops and are a great choice for warmer days as they allow the air to flow more freely across your arms and through your shirt. Long sleeved t-shirts are ideal for cooler weather as they provide that extra warmth, but can also be a good choice on sunny days when you want to protect your shoulders and arms from the harmful UV rays of the summer sun.

Neck type: you can choose different collar types for your shirt to suit your style as well. From a classic crew neck to a V-neck, these little changes in just the collar of your shirt alone can drastically change the look and feel of your outfit.

Crop Tops: If you want to show off your midsection, you could opt for a crop top. With less fabric to cover you, these are a nice option for hot days.

Fits: Do you like your shirt to hang loosely off your body or do you want to show off your shape a bit more? Choosing a classic or slim fit can make all the difference to the look you’re trying to give off.

Fabric: You could go with all natural cotton, which is cool and breathable. But if you’re going to be doing a lot of sweating or are going to be subjecting it to a lot of wear from friction and stretching, you may want to opt for a synthetic blend which wicks off sweat better and can endure an active lifestyle.

Making Your Shirt Even Better

Printed Designs - Companies: Plenty of companies use t-shirts as canvasses to display their brand logos, names or characters. When you choose to wear a company’s design, you are showing your support for them. It can also spark conversations with other followers of the brand.

Printed Designs – Personal Statements: We also choose t-shirt designs for the meaning they hold for us. Choosing a design that you love, and that speaks about your beliefs or personality can make a person feel known and understood. Will you choose a controversial design and make a bold statement, or choose something humorous and light hearted to spark up friendly conversations? Or maybe you would prefer something more artistic, or a simplistic design on your shirt.

A shirt can also make a great gift for someone you care for. Not only does a carefully chosen design speak directly to the receiver, it also lets them know how well you know them. Even better.
