Taking Your Crochet to the Next Level: Effortless Felt Embellishments!

Taking Your Crochet to the Next Level: Effortless Felt Embellishments!

So, hopefully you saw our last blog post where we showed you how to make the simplest and easiest mug cozy. Now that you have your beautiful new mug cozy, perhaps you want to add a bit more to it. Although your handiwork is beautiful as it is, you might like to add a little embellishment to it. One easy way of doing this is by felting a design onto it. A single crochet fabric makes a perfect canvas for felting as it is dense and has less stretch than lighter crochet fabrics.

Materials

  • Your mug cozy
  • A towel (to place your work on top of as you felt)
  • Sheets of felt fabric
  • Felting needle
  • Scissors (to cut the felt fabric with)

Steps:

  1. Fold your towel so that you have a thick and soft surface to work on. You want to make sure the towel is folded thick enough so that when you stab the needle through your work it will not hit and damage your table.
  2. Cut out your felt pieces into the shapes that you want to add onto your cozy.
  3. Place the first felt piece onto your cozy and begin stabbing with the felt needle. Start at the edges so that they are held in place securely, then move towards the middle of the piece. You may wish to wear finger protectors if you are worried about accidentally stabbing your fingers. If you are going to be felting pieces over one another, make sure the first piece you felt onto your work is the one that should be on the bottom layer, underneath all of the others.
  4. Use the felting needle to shape the felt. Make sure to push the needle all the way through your crochet piece, this will ensure the felt fibres are pushed all the way through and will be securely attached.
  5. Place the next piece of felt on your work and jab the felting needle through, as before, until the felt is attached securely to your work.

Repeat the process untill you have added all the felt you want to you crochet and you are happy with your work of art!

Happy felting!
