Easy Crochet Mug Cozy Tutorial for Beginners - Keep Your Drinks Warm For Longer

A lovely hand made mug cozy can help prevent you from burning your hands on a steaming mug of hot chocolate or coffee AND can keep your mug warmer for longer. They also make great gifts. keep all your friends’ mugs warm with a personalised, hand made mug cozy!

It is super easy and quick to make a cozy for your mug, and we have a pattern that fits our 11oz ceramic mugs perfectly! If you want to make this for a different sized mug, it is so easy to adapt, give it a try.

You only need to know how to:

  1. Make a slip knot
  2. Chain
  3. Single crochet

So, this mug cozy is a great project for a beginner.

Since the entire piece is made using single crochet, it gives you a high quality, dense and durable finished product.

Using a different sized crochet hook or different thickness of yarn will give a finished product of a different size, so hold your work up to your mug during the early stages of your work to make sure it is going to fit. The length of the cozy should reach from one side of the handle, round the mug, to the other side of the handle.

You will need:

  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Double knit yarn (you could also use yarn scraps)
  • Scissors

This tutorial will use the following abbreviations:

SC – Single crochet

Ch – Chain

Steps:

1. Start with a slip knot and Ch 55.

2. Skipping the very last stitch, SC all the way back down the chain.

3. Once you get to the end of the chain, Ch 1, turn your work over and SC all the way back down.

4. Repeat until you have 20 rows of SC in total.

5. Once you finish the last row, SC all the way around the 3 other edges of your rectangle, doing 3 SC into the stitches at each of the corners.

6. When you get to the last corner, Ch 20 and attach the end of the chain with a SC to the other corner, following the short edge.

7. Continue to SC down the long edge until you get to the corner on the other side of the rectangle.

8. Once you reach the corner, Ch 20 and attach the end of the chain to the last corner and secure with a SC.

9. Tie off the end and hide the end of the yarn using the yarn needle

10. Use the chains at either end to secure your lovely new cozy around your mug!

If making this mug cozy with a thinner yarn, such as the multicoloured thread in the photos, I would recommend starting with a chain of 65 and doing 22 rows in total.
